Vet Services for Pigs

The first thing that we tend to observe on pigs is their behavior, their appetite and their droppings; afterward, we check the state of their hair and skin, the respiratory system, and the entire body to rule out any anomalies.

Pigs are nervous animals, which is why we try to keep them as calm and relaxed as possible whenever we are taking any type of sample. At Healthy Paws, we tend to perform a couple of lab tests to evaluate the function of their organs and immune system.

This allows us to rule out infectious diseases and to prevent any complications, which is why we strongly recommend getting your chubby pals tested periodically.

Regardless of their age, all pigs require hoof trimming, which is crucial to avoid lameness and wounds; however, the frequency could vary since not all pigs have the same rate of hoof growth. For example, sedentary pigs need more frequent trimming than active pigs.

On another note, even though all pigs can grow tusks, only male pigs require regular trimming, which is why the best way to go is by asking one of our vets what is the best timing and schedule for your chubby companion.

At Healthy Paws, we want to protect your chubby companions from a list of complications that are easily preventable through vaccination. Our vets can give your pig a shot for: Clostridium C and D, Tetanus, Erysipelothrix Rhusiopathiae and Leptospirosis, among others.

Pigs are typically purged 18 days after weaning, but after this happens, we strongly recommend deworming them regularly to avoid any parasites; however, if this is the case, we can treat them with Ivermectin or Fenbendazole.

Ivermectin is ideal for: scabies, lice, roundworms, lungworms and threadworms; while Fenbendazole is ideal for: tapeworms, whipworms, roundworms and hookworms. Some of these treatments could be applied topically as well as subcutaneously, feel free to ask our vets for more information.
